Euston is one of London’s most important transport hubs, combining a major London Underground interchange with one of the busiest mainline railway terminals in Britain. Sitting on the northern edge of central London along Euston Road, the station is the southern terminus of the West Coast Main Line — the UK’s premier intercity rail corridor connecting London to the English Midlands, the North West, and Scotland.

On the Underground, Euston is served by both the Victoria line and the Northern line, offering rapid connections to Victoria, Oxford Circus, London Bridge, the City, and virtually every other central London destination. The Northern line is particularly useful as it splits into two branches from Euston, providing routes both via Bank (City of London) and via Charing Cross (the West End).

The current station building dates from 1968, replacing the original 1837 terminus — the very first intercity railway terminal in London — whose celebrated Doric arch was controversially demolished during redevelopment. Today Euston handles around 45 million passengers per year across its 18 National Rail platforms, making it one of the most heavily used stations in the UK. A major redevelopment programme is planned in connection with the HS2 high-speed rail project.

The British Library — 0.5 miles

The UK’s national library holds over 170 million items and hosts world-class free exhibitions on literature, history, maps, and sound. The permanent Sir John Ritblat Treasures Gallery contains the Magna Carta, a Gutenberg Bible, the Lindisfarne Gospels, and original Beatles manuscripts. Open daily; free entry to galleries.

Regent’s Park — 0.7 miles

One of London’s great Royal Parks, easily reached on foot from Euston up Hampstead Road. Boating lake, Queen Mary’s Rose Garden, the Open Air Theatre, and ZSL London Zoo are all within the park. A wonderful escape from the busy station area on a fine day.

St Pancras International & King’s Cross — 0.5 miles

A short walk east along Euston Road leads to the extraordinary Victorian Gothic facade of St Pancras International and the redeveloped King’s Cross area. The King’s Cross regeneration includes Coal Drops Yard, Granary Square, and Central Saint Martins — well worth an hour’s exploration.

Euston Square Gardens — on site

A small but pleasant garden square immediately opposite the station on Euston Road. Useful for a moment’s fresh air with benches, and contains a statue of Robert Stephenson — the engineer who built the London to Birmingham railway that originally served Euston.

London’s most celebrated Indian restaurant group, serving Bombay café-style food in a stunning art-deco dining room. The legendary black dal, bacon naan, and chilli cheese toast are not to be missed.
